Public Law 112-154, 2nd Automobile Allowance

Public Law 112-154 provides that Veterans who have previously purchased a vehicle using an automobile grant and suffered a loss of that vehicle due to a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Harvey, Irma, or Maria may qualify for a 2nd automobile allowance under this statute.  In the coming days and weeks, information on this benefit will be distributed on the VA website and social media outlets.

Current manual procedures direct field personnel to submit claims for a second automobile allowance to the Compensation Service Advisory Staff through the 211 Policy mailbox at 211PolicyStaff.vbavaco@va.gov.  See M21 IX.i.2.3.e.  As these cases are tracked for congressional reporting purposes. The request should include the following information:

  • Veteran’s name
  • File number
  • Date of prior automobile grant
  • Make, model and year of the vehicle purchased with the original grant
  • Make, model and year of the vehicle claimed as destroyed
  • Circumstances surrounding the destruction of the vehicle
  • Confirmation of whether the destroyed vehicle was under a comprehensive insurance policy
